Fuel-saving feature: Weight loss
Savings: At least 150 pounds

The next-generation Ford Explorer, which arrives in 2010, will be based on the Explorer America Concept. The new Explorer switches from a traditional, ladder-like frame like a pickup truck to a more car-like unibody. The V-6 version of the new Explorer will weigh at least 150 pounds less than today’s V-6 model, thanks to a smaller but more powerful turbocharged engine, the use of more lightweight materials, plus lighter suspension and chassis components, Ford said. Based on many gas-saving features, including but not limited to the lighter weight, the new model will get 20% to 30% better mileage.
